Ubisoft Leamington Officially Closes Its Doors After 23 Years

Ubisoft Leamington Spa has officially closed its studio doors, following confirmation from Ubisoft back in January that the studio would be shutting down.

Originally founded as FreeStyleGames in 2002, the Leamington Spa team was the oldest game studio still operating in the area and one of the oldest game studios to be based in Leamington. FreeStyleGames began as an independent team before being acquired by Activision in 2008, where it led the development of DJ Hero, DJ Hero 2, and Guitar Hero Live. After being acquired by Ubisoft in 2017, the studio mainly ran support on big Ubisoft titles and franchises, from Tom Clancy to Far Cry, all the way up to the recently released Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Spotted by GamesIndustry.Biz, the studio announced today its final day with a post on its official LinkedIn page, which will soon be merged with the Ubisoft Reflections page.

After many incredible years, we want to share the news that Ubisoft Leamington has officially closed its doors. We are beyond grateful to our talented team, whose creativity, passion and dedication have left a lasting mark on the games we’ve createdthe memories we’ve shared and the community we’ve built in Leamington,” the post reads.

It also adds that anyone local to Leamington will “still see our remaining team around town, and at local industry events,” so there are still a handful of people working for Ubisoft remotely in Leamington. Just not at the historic building they once all shared, where numerous talented developers have passed through in the last two decades.

100 developers have lost their jobs with the closing of this studio, which was reportedly working on an unannounced IP before being shut down. This could potentially have been the first title that the Leamington team would have been leading development on rather than running support as it had done on Ubisoft titles since 2017.
