The rumored God of War series Metroidvania spin-off set in Ancient Greece may not be released this year, as the game has reportedly been delayed internally.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, the ever-reliable Jeff Grubb confirmed he’s heard that the game has been internally delayed to 2026, so it will likely be a while before the game launches. No other information has been provided, so it’s still uncertain when we will get the first look at the game that should tide fans of the series over until the launch of the next mainline entry in the series.
Very little is known about this God of War series spin-off, besides the fact that it will be a 2.5D Metroidvania game set in Ancient Greece. The scale of the project is reportedly small, so we shouldn’t expect to see a Metroidvania take on the gameplay formula introduced in 2018’s God of War which was further refined in God of War Ragnarok, although both games do have some elements lifted from the genre, such as locations that can only be accessed after acquiring certain abilities and more.
Though very similar to its predecessor, Santa Monica Studio introduced a very interesting twist to the series’ current formula with the God of War Ragnarok Valhalla update, which brought a roguelite mode that works incredibly well. You can learn more about this mode and how it enhanced the experience of the entire game by checking out my review.
