Amazon’s Fire TV Sticks are still some of the most popular streaming devices on the planet, but they are getting some new competition from the team at Roku. This telly firm has long been a thorn in Amazon’s side with it offering rival streaming devices such as the Roku Express.– However, despite Amazon bringing a swathe of updates to its Fire Sticks in recent years, Roku has been surprisingly quiet when it comes to upgraded devices.
Luckily, that’s just changed with Roku confirming that it’s launching two new streaming gadgets in June. These include an entry-level Roku Streaming Stick and a more premium Roku Streaming Stick Plus.
The cheaper of the two will cost just £29.99 when it arrives in stores and promises to feature improved Wi-Fi connectivity, full access to all the most popular streaming services, and the option to see personalised recommendations.
Roku is also boasting that it is adding a voice-enabled remote control for the first time at this low price point. That will allow users to change the volume, power on their TV, or search for entertainment just by using their voice.
Next, there’s that Streaming Stick Plus option, which adds pin-sharp 4K compatibility and vivid HDR colour for improved visuals on the screen – it will cost £39.99.
Both devices will also get a new slimline design and neat remote with volume controls and quick launch buttons for apps such as Netflix and Disney+.
Another bonus is that they get all the power they need from the TV’s HDMI port, which means they don’t have to be plugged into the mains.
As a quick reminder, Amazon’s Fire TV Stick range – which includes an HD model, Fire TV Stick 4K and ultimate 4K Max device – start from £39.99 which means Roku’s entry-level offering will be cheaper.
“We are proud to unveil a new chapter in the Roku streaming journey with an updated look, feel, and performance for our streaming players,” said Richard Halton, Country Manager at Roku UK.
“With over 15 years of innovation, our commitment has always been to make consumers’ lives easier by simplifying the TV viewing experience. Our two new powerful streaming players are packed with great features and will be available from June – ideal for keeping entertained during the summer holidays.”
