Bungie’s upcoming first-person extraction shooter, Marathon, is just coming off of its open preview Server Slam, which gave players on PS5 and PC a chance to jump in and try the game themselves for free before it arrives on the aforementioned platforms later this week on March 5, 2026.
The preview weekend gave players an opportunity to provide Bungie with a lot of feedback, some of which the studio has already been able to address with fixes that were applied during the server slam, while other issues will continue to be investigated and tweaked post-launch.
One thing that’s also come out of the Server Slam, which ended yesterday, is a new sales estimate from data firm Alinea Analytics. The firm’s latest report digs into the big winners post-Steam Next Fest, looking at which games came out of the festival with the most wishlists and engagement. While it was a PvE pirate-themed survival game, Windrose, that ended up with the most wishlishts, Marathon came in second place.
Beyond wishlists, Alinea Analytics also estimates that Marathon has already sold close to 250K copies on Steam as of yesterday, March 2, 2026. Strong as those early estimates are, its engagement over the course of the Server Slam isn’t all positive, as it showed a significant drop-off on the second day that it never recovered from.
Still, 250K copies, or even in the area of that number, is nothing to scoff at, and it’ll be interesting to see how the game evolves once it arrives later this week. Speaking of that arrival, shortly after Alinea Analytics revealed its sales estimates, Bungie published a new PlayStation Blog post that detailed the game’s launch content roadmap.
First and foremost, Bungie confirmed that the seasonal updates for Marathon will be available to all players, without having to purchase additional DLC or expansions. All players will start with a fresh vault with each new season, with the seasonal resets intended to keep the game “dangerous” and to make the loot you acquire feel “meaningful.”
Though perhaps most significantly, it seems like this is a route Bungie has chosen to combat one of the biggest complaints it hears about Destiny 2, which is that it’s nigh-impenetrable for new or even lapsed returning players. Resetting every player’s vault of loot they’ve collected over the course of a season means “there’s always an opportunity to get back into the game or bring a friend along without feeling behind the curve,” writes principal content marketing manager at Bungie, Brian Ekberg.
In theory, it could work just as intended, with everyone adjusting to the fact that their loot won’t be theirs forever, and each season is a new opportunity to rise above other players after starting back on a somewhat even playing field. It could also make players feel like the effort they put into obtaining loot isn’t worth it, and frustrate them to the point where they drop the game. We’ll see where it lands.
That said, Ekberg does add that, “As you progress throughout the season – completing contracts and collection faction upgrades – you’ll be granted access to stronger base stats and to better gear in the Armory. Your power floor will rise over time, and recovering from a loss will be easier, as will crafting your ideal build.” So there’s still something to hold onto with each season reset.
Season 1 is called: Death is the First Step, and it’ll add a new zone called Cryo Archive, a new gun, a competitive Ranked Mode, and an in-game on top of all the content that’ll be included from launch. As a reminder, the launch content includes the game’s three initial zones, six Runner Shells (plus the seventh Rook shell), six factions and upgrade trees, and 28 weapons in its arsenal, each with several mods and different implants for your Runner Shell loadouts.
The first season will run from launch until sometime in June 2026, at which point Season 2: Nightfall will arrive. It’ll add a new version of the Dire Marsh map with Night Marsh, a new Runner Shell called Sentinel, new weapons, cores, implants, and a new Cradle system that gives you “more autonomy over your Runner shell’s statistical strengths and weaknesses.” Season 3, which Bungie has yet to reveal the title of, will arrive in August 2026 at the conclusion of Season 2.
Marathon arrives on PC and PS5 later this week, on March 5, 2026.
