GTA 6 Lets Jason and Lucia Become Lovers or Just Friends, But Rockstar Won’t Let Players Break The Duo Up

Game Informer’s new cover story on GTA 6 has delivered arguably the biggest single dump of official details since the game’s reveal, covering everything from Jason and Lucia’s relationship system to a new police Heat system, hurricanes, and the game’s absurdly detailed wildlife.

Rockstar’s Art Director Aaron Garbut admits the expectations surrounding the game are unprecedented and that the studio doesn’t take them lightly. Its answer, apparently, was to try to overdeliver – a tall order for the most anticipated game of all time.

America Dialed Up to 11

Garbut describes Florida, the main inspiration for Leonida, as “America dialed up to 11,” a place of beauty and contrast that makes it the perfect setting for a GTA game. To portray it accurately, over the past several years, the team made repeated trips to Miami and South Florida, riding around at night with former cops, visiting nightclubs, and spending time on the beaches, in the Everglades and down in the Keys. Designers also spoke with residents to learn more about local culture, crime and law enforcement.

The result is the biggest map Rockstar has ever built, and by a significant margin. As reported before, Leonida is roughly double the size of GTA V’s world, but it’s also denser, more detailed, and more interactive. Garbut says Rockstar obsessed over every part of the world, from rooftops and alleys to building interiors and everything in between, to the point that the sheer number of interiors makes buildings feel real both inside and out.

The map is split across six main regions:

  • Vice City, with Miami’s glamour and hustle, Art Deco architecture and congested roads
  • The Leonida Keys, where Jason begins the game
  • Grassrivers, drawing on the Everglades’ history as a drug-running hotbed
  • Port Gellhorn, representing Florida’s struggling tourist traps, with abandoned attractions, cheap motels and derelict strip malls
  • Ambrosia, described as the heart of Leonida, a symbol of American industry full of factories, refineries and a local biker gang
  • Mount Kalaga National Park, on Leonida’s northern border along the Leonida-Gloriana line, Rockstar’s take on the Florida-Georgia line

Mount Kalaga draws on Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala and smaller rural towns, and includes communities built around private jet ownership, complete with personal landing strips. Between its towns, players will find ATV and mountain bike trails, farms and high-end ranches, a luxury private golf course, and lakes lined with forests draped in Spanish moss.

Jason and Lucia Can Be Lovers or Just Friends

Jason is an army veteran working for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys when GTA 6 begins. Lucia is a Liberty City native, trained in combat sports by her father, who ended up in prison after a mysterious incident involving her family.

Their relationship is, to an extent, shaped by the player. You can’t make them break up, as their story is inextricably linked, but you can influence whether they stay friends or become a romantic couple, through small interactions like holding hands, opening doors for each other, answering calls and texts promptly, and doing activities together.

Rockstar stresses that engaging with any of this is entirely optional and that there’s no gameplay benefit to being either friends or a couple. Certain elements of the story will change depending on which way the relationship goes, though.

Robberies, Heat, and Stealing the Right Car

Robberies can be tackled solo or as a duo, but pulling them off together strengthens Jason and Lucia’s bond. They can be approached loud and fast or quiet and thorough, which determines whether and how the police respond.

When they do, the returning six-star Wanted level is there, alongside a new Heat system. The police can gather information based on the couple’s appearance and whereabouts, so changing their hairstyles and clothing and ditching the getaway vehicle will help them escape. If the police know they’re chasing a pair, splitting up can divide their attention.

Car theft sounds more involved, too. Some vehicles can be stolen the old-fashioned way, but expensive ones may need specialized tools and come with sophisticated security systems and even trackers. A new phone app called WAiNK lets players scan a vehicle to reveal its security, the cost of registering it as their own, and what a fence would pay for it. Money matters beyond cars as well: some missions only become available once they’ve accumulated enough cash.

A World That Feels Alive

Rockstar says Leonida’s citizens are the most diverse and detailed it has ever created, both in how they look and in their ambient dialogue, which is written by a dedicated team in Los Angeles.

NPCs vary in height and body type, down to localized differences in musculature and weight distribution. Skin details include freckles, moles and tanning, while vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane says the team even paid a crazy amount of attention to culturally accurate tattoos matching Florida’s communities. Hairstyles and grooming are far more varied than in any previous GTA game, with many more ethnic styles represented, and clothing reflects the local style of each region. GTA 6 also features Rockstar’s largest-ever range of clothing and accessories.

The weather system received particular attention during development, being rebuilt to be more localized and persistent, according to Rockstar’s Owen Shepherd. Fully dynamic cloudscapes roll across the map, so players can be sitting under the sunshine while watching a storm rage in a nearby area. Rain can produce rainbows under the right lighting, and puddles stick around after it stops. A new wind system adds offshore breezes after sunset, rising warm air and airflow blocked by buildings, sending debris swirling across rooftops, rippling the water and bending swamp grass.

And yes, tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed. Shepherd didn’t say how often they occur or how they affect gameplay, but described them as dense, torrential affairs with water gushing from rooftops and lightning illuminating the clouds.

Then there’s the wildlife. GTA 6 features over 170 animal species, including more than 60 bird types and over 30 land mammals, some of them Leonida natives never before seen in a Rockstar game. Alongside alligators, manatees, flamingos and pelicans, there are invasive species like green iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, armadillos and rhesus macaques. In the water, Jason and Lucia will find sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish, each with distinct movement.

Building on Red Dead Redemption 2’s tech, animals can display iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency, with new fur systems that simulate dirt, matting, clumping and getting wet. Animals are also categorized as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, and can be tracked.

The pause map now has a satellite-style look, and a new ride-share service called RydeMe serves as a fast travel option. It’s even possible to interact with other NPC passengers on shared rides. As for the side activities, Game Informer newly confirms billiards, mini-golf, zoos and air boating, joining the already known base jumping, gyms, kayaking, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, and jet skiing.

Built for Multiple Playthroughs

Perhaps the single most significant detail released in the Game Informer story is how much choice matters. According to Rockstar, decisions, big and small, can significantly alter the story’s direction, and the game is designed to encourage multiple playthroughs while rewarding players who spend time exploring Leonida.

Garbut sums up the ambition plainly: games normally trade scale for detail, or detail for interaction, but with GTA 6, Rockstar dialed up everything at once. The Art Director went on to say he doesn’t believe the studio created anything close to this before.

Needless to say, the hype ahead of November 19 will skyrocket following this latest info blowout. Luckily, with GTA 6 now just over a month and a half away, the wait is almost over.
