CAPCOM‘s Resident Evil series is as popular as it has ever been, and the smashing success of Resident Evil Requiem and the recent movie directed by Zach Cregger suggest that the Japanese developer won’t slow down with new projects anytime soon. While work continues on Resident Evil Veronica, the Japanese publisher is looking ahead to the future of the franchise, which, at this time, doesn’t seem to include remaking the final two numbered entries in the series that remain.
“Not true as far as I know,” said known insider Dusk Golem on X in response to a rumor circulating online that Resident Evil 5 and 6 remakes are in the works. “I think Resident Evil 5 will happen eventually, but it’s not happening now as of a few months ago, and they greenlit a few RE projects a few months ago, none of them were RE5, & to my knowledge all the teams hands are full with other projects for any possibility for this to be true, unless like some project got scrapped in half a year and replaced with this for some reason, which I find incredibly unlikely with the things I’ve heard.”
As a Resident Evil 5 remake is an obvious eventuality, “various people will try to push fake rumors,” according to Dusk Golem, but the insider promised that “there’s not an RE5 or RE6 Remake releasing in the next 5 years at least.”
That a Resident Evil 5 remake is not in development shouldn’t surprise those who have been following the latest series’ rumors, as Dusk Golem revealed back in June that there’s no strong desire within CAPCOM to remake the game, which is something that did not happen for other remakes such as Resident Evil 2, 4, and Veronica. However, Dusk believes that, due to fan demand, CAPCOM will eventually give in and release a remake, although how much it will be changed, given its setting and gameplay are very different from recent entries in the series, remains to be seen.
The situation for Resident Evil 6 is even more complex. While the fifth entry in the series is still generally well regarded among fans, the sixth entry in the series is a very divisive game that almost led to the end of the entire franchise, which required years and a game like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard to be rejuvenated.
During an interview focused on the upcoming Stupid Never Dies held at gamescom 2026, I asked the game’s director Eiichiro Sasaki what he would have changed about the game, and I received a no-answer, which only highlights how difficult it would be to remake a game that would need a fundamental rethink to fall in line with the series’ current direction.
