The Fire HD 8 is on sale for £49.99, provided you are signed up to Amazon Prime – that’s how you access all the sale prices for Prime Day 2025, which is on now and runs from Tuesday July 8 to Friday July 11.
You might be eligible for a 30-day free trial for Amazon Prime, which you can use to shop the sale this week and then cancel for no charge before the regular £8.99 monthly price kicks in.
The Fire HD 8 is not the most advanced tablet in the world by a long shot, but it’s incredibly affordable at this price. You’re unlikely to find a cheaper tablet at any time of year from a major brand such as Amazon. It has access to all the apps you would expect to stream video, from Netflix to Disney+, BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and of course Prime Video.
One thing to note is Amazon tablets can’t download or run Google apps – so there’s no Gmail or YouTube.
If this doesn’t matter to you, it’s a decent choice for you or your kids to watch video on a shoestring budget.
Given this is an Amazon tablet, you can also download the Kindle app and use the device as a Kindle. It’s a little larger than most e-readers, and of course you have an LCD screen instead of E Ink, but the size isn’t too large to use it for this purpose.
For £49.99, you will have to put up with lockscreen ads, though. Amazon charges £10 more to remove these, which is annoying, but just click “without ads” on the product page and you can get this version for £59.99.
Both these models come with 32GB storage, which is not a lot. You can also opt for a 64GB model, with or without ads. All versions are half the price of their usual RRP, and all are available in either black, green or purple. The tablet’s plastic construction means it’s fairly lightweight at just 337 grams.
Front and rear cameras mean you can take video calls, and Amazon promises up to 13 hours of battery life, rechargeable via USB-C.
What’s more, you can also use Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant using the Fire HD 8, asking it to do things like tell youtube weather forecast, to video call people, listen to music or even control your smart home devices.
