Amazon just gave you a very good reason to ditch your Ring Doorbell

Right now, in a deal exclusive to Prime members, Amazon is selling a bundle that includes the Ring Battery Video Doorbell and an Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker all for just £65.99.

The RRP of the Ring Doorbell on its own is £99, while the Echo Dot usually costs £54.99. That means this deal saves you £88.99 on the normal combined price, a huge 57 percent discount, that hopefully is a sign of things to come over Prime Day, which is from July 8 to July 11.

The reason Amazon bundles these two products together is because without the Echo Dot speaker, the Ring Doorbell does not come with a chime box. On its own, the Ring Doorbell still works, but would only ping your smartphone with a notification if someone presses the bell or if the sensors detected something for you to view.

With the Echo Dot linked to the Doorbell, it can be used as a chime, just like a traditional doorbell, making a sound that can be heard throughout your home when someone’s at the door.

Ring Doorbells are popular security gadgets as their cameras can keep an eye on the comings and goings outside your door, and can also be used to talk to people if you’re not at home. If a delivery diver arrives but you’re not in, you can have a two way audio chat with them, and you’ll be able to see them thanks to the Ring’s built in camera.

Other features, some of which require a monthly subscription, include motion detection, night vision, HD video and ‘privacy zones’ that you can set so the Doorbell doesn’t record video in areas where you don’t want it to. This model is battery powered, so you don’t have to wire it into the mains. It’s easy to remove and quickly recharge, and the Ring app will alert you to low battery.

As well as actings as a chime, the Echo Dot in this bundle is a handy gadget in its own right. It can answer questions and perform actions you ask fo its thanks to Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. From asking the time, weather, what to make for dinner or some general knowledge trivia, the Echo can also play radio including all BBC stations, and can link to various music subscription services to play music on-demand.

This £65.99 bundle is labelled as an ‘Early Prime Day Deal’, which is pretty cheeky of Amazon considering Prime Day isn’t here yet. But it also means it’s unclear if this discount will run into the sale event itself, so you might want to act now to get this solid price.

Remember, you have to have a Prime membership to access this price, but you may be eligible for a 30-day free Prime trial, which would of course also cover all of Prime Day, giving you access to all the deals across the four day sale event.
